How many porta potties do I need for my event?

Use this rule: guests × hours ÷ 250, rounded up. A 150-guest, 5-hour wedding needs 3 standard units (150 × 5 = 750; 750 ÷ 250 = 3). If a bar is open, add 1 unit for every 4, so the wedding needs 4. Then make 1 of the 4 wheelchair-accessible.

How many extra units do I add for alcohol, food or kids?

Add 1 unit for every 4 units when alcohol is served, with a minimum of 1. Add 1 hand wash station for every 4 units when food is served. For events with many young kids, add a deluxe unit with a sink or a hand wash station near the play area. These are whole-number steps, not percentages.

How many porta potties does a job site need?

OSHA's legal minimum is 1 toilet for 20 or fewer workers, then 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers, and per 50 workers at 200 or more (29 CFR 1926.51 Table D-1). Our recommendation is about 1 standard unit per 10 workers on a 40-hour week with weekly service.

How many wheelchair-accessible units do I need?

At least 5% of the portable toilets in each cluster must be accessible, and never fewer than 1, under section 213.2 of the 2010 ADA Standards. A cluster of 2 to 20 units needs 1 accessible unit; 21 to 40 units need 2. Our accessible units have a 60-inch-diameter turning space inside.

How many units for a farm or harvest crew?

Farm employers need 1 toilet and 1 handwashing facility for every 20 field workers, within a quarter-mile walk, under OSHA 29 CFR 1928.110. A 45-worker harvest crew therefore needs 3 toilets and 3 handwashing facilities. Towable units help when crews move across large fields.

Sizing questions

Straight answers from the dispatch desk. Not covered here? Call (469) 326-5635.

Where does the 250 guest-hours number come from?

It is our dispatch method: a 60-gallon tank handles about 200–250 uses, and guests use the restroom about once every 1–2 hours. Industry charts used by portable sanitation companies land on similar counts.

Do more women guests change the count?

Yes. Women use a unit longer and more often than men. For mostly-female events like showers, add 1 unit to the result.

Can I rent fewer units and add service?

On long events, yes. A mid-event pump-out lets 3 units do the work of 4 on a 10-hour day.

Should the accessible unit be separate from the others?

Put it in the same cluster on firm, level ground with a clear path. Rule 213.2 counts units per cluster.
