What is a wheelchair-accessible porta potty?

A wheelchair-accessible porta potty is a larger unit built to ADA dimensions: about 62 by 62 inches inside, with a ground-level floor and a door about 34 inches wide. There is room for a 60-inch turning circle, and grab bars line the walls. It also helps guests with walkers, canes or small children.

Top-down plan of a wheelchair-accessible portable restroom A square unit about 62 by 62 inches with a dashed 60-inch diameter turning circle in the middle, a toilet in the back corner, grab bars on the side and back walls, and a door about 34 inches wide on the front wall. 60" diameter turning space Toilet Grab bars Door about 34" ground-level floor, no step about 62" about 62"

Plan view, not to exact scale. The 60-inch circle may overlap the toilet's toe space, as §304 allows.

How many handicap porta potties does my event need?

Under the 2010 ADA Standards §213.2, at least 5% of the units in each cluster must be accessible, and at least 1 when you group 2 or more units. So a row of 4 standard units needs 1 accessible unit. A bank of 25 units needs 2. Each separate cluster counts on its own.

5% rule, rounded up, minimum 1 per cluster of 2+
Units in one clusterAccessible units neededExample layout
10 required (1 is still kind)1 standard or 1 accessible
2–2013 standard + 1 accessible
21–40228 standard + 2 accessible

Where can a wheelchair-accessible unit go?

A wheelchair-accessible unit needs a firm, level spot and a clear route about 6 feet wide, or a spot our truck can drive right up to. At about 300 pounds and 62 inches wide, it will not fit most side gates. The path from parking to the door must be smooth, with no curb or step.

  • Pavement, a driveway or packed gravel is best.
  • Grass works only when dry and flat. Wet clay lets wheels sink.
  • Keep the door side clear: a 5-foot flat area in front of it.
  • No curb, step or loose mulch between parking and the unit.
  • Place it at the end of a row so the door is easy to reach.

Firm placements: driveway, side yard and lawn. The accessible unit needs the driveway or a drive-up spot.

When is the accessible unit the wrong choice?

The accessible unit is the wrong choice in 2 cases: when the only spot is behind a narrow gate, and when the site is soft or sloped. In both, the unit cannot be set level, and a guest in a wheelchair cannot get in safely. A different spot or an ADA trailer may be the fix.

How much does a wheelchair-accessible porta potty cost?

A wheelchair-accessible porta potty starts at $225 for an event of up to 3 days, or $195 per 28-day cycle with weekly service. When you rent it with other units, there is still just one delivery fee per order. Texas sales tax of 8.25% is added; there are no fuel or removal fees.

Wheelchair-accessible porta potty questions

Straight answers from the dispatch desk. Not covered here? Call (469) 326-5635.

Do I have to rent a handicap porta potty for my event?

If you group 2 or more units, the 2010 ADA Standards call for at least 1 accessible unit, or 5% of the cluster. Your venue or permit office makes the final call.

Does your handicap unit meet ADA rules?

Our unit is built to ADA dimensions, with a 60-inch turning space, grab bars and a ground-level floor. Whether a whole site meets the rules also depends on the path, parking and placement.

How wide is the door on the wheelchair-accessible unit?

About 34 inches. The floor is level with the ground, so there is no step at the door.

Can the accessible unit go in my backyard?

Only if a truck can drive close or there is a firm, 6-foot-wide path. It is about 62 inches wide and will not pass a normal side gate.

Can a parent with a stroller use the accessible unit?

Yes. The extra floor space works well for parents with small kids, guests with walkers and anyone who needs help from a companion.

Can I rent an accessible unit for a job site?

Yes. It is $195 per 28-day cycle with weekly service. Some public works and remodel jobs ask for one on site.
